Southern-Style Turkey Chili with Cheddar Cornbread Waffle

While out Christmas shopping, I spotted the Shaq's Family Style Cookbook. Standing in the store, I started flipping through the pages.

Hmm, I'd eat that.

Oh, that looks good.

Dang, that sounds delicious.

The consensus was, this cookbook seemed to be front-to-back full of recipes of things that I loved eating ... so it came home with me.

D and I went through the whole book and picked out a few recipes, which was hard, we wanted to try first.

The winner for the first cook was ... let's be honest, if you made it this far and you don't know what dish it is, there's no hope ...

Usually I would have multiple pictures throughout the cook, but we had received some tragic news and really just wasn't all there.

We cooked to exact directions (we didn't put the beans in the food processor), except we did a little longer cook and in our new Dutch Oven.

This was one of the most delicious chilis, I've ever made or had (see below for the one change we WILL make the next time).

Once the chili was out and cooling, we made the cheddar cornbread waffles.

All I can say about this is, other than D's jalapeno cheddar cornbread, this is the only other cornbread I want to have for the rest of my life.

Disclaimer, I did have to run to the store to get cornmeal because we forgot it, and by the time I got back it was late and we were scrambling, so we didn't add the green chilies to the cornbread (which I wouldn't have put in mine anyway).

If you follow me on Twitter, which if you don't, I'm not really sure how you found this, and if you don't ... go follow now ... I'll wait ...

Ok, thanks!

Ok, so immediately after taking the first bite my nose started running and I could feel that tingle all the way down my throat. "Woah!" I said as I simulated blowing smoke out of my mouth.

D said, "yeah, I thought 1/4 cup plus a tablespoon of chili powder was a lot."

I posted about it here and I don't feel like the comments truly believed me, so here is actual picture from the ingredients.

D said that, "it's not THAT bad", but I have limited spicy foods for health/medical reasons so I think it just hit me a little harder. She did say it was a good bit much, but I was just being a sissy ... which could be true.

This was the perfect meal to put an end to a cold rainy week.

I'm docking it a little because of the abundance of chili powder, but we'll just limit that the next time we make it, and there will be a next time.
