Games are all about momentum. Sometimes it's about getting a big momentum swing late in the game, sometimes it's about stopping a momentum swing before it gets too out of hand, but sometimes it's about stepping up and killing that momentum before it even gets started.
In games like Saturday where "smaller" schools are playing "bigger schools", it's best to not let them think they have a chance, because if they think they have a chance, they will.
Georgia State came out with a great game plan Saturday night and was driving early in the 1st quarter. They'd gotten into our redzone and decided to go for it on 4th and 1 instead of kicking a field goal. I mean, they had moved the ball down the field fairly quickly, thanks to a former Gamecock Jaymest Williams busting a huge run, so why wouldn't think they could pick up a single yard?
The play bounced left and True Freshman, Nick Emmanwori saw it, stepped up, and ATE EM UP, driving the runner back and stopping him short of the first down marker.
The play looks great by itself, and made a lot of fans realize what the coaches and players had been saying all Summer and Fall camp long. But another thing it did that isn't getting enough credit is, it kept Georgia State off the score board, which kept them from building early momentum, and gave our guys enough time to get used to playing against other guys that our own.
Congratulations Nick Emmanwori on not only the first "Ate Em Up" of the season, but the first ever! I also don't think this will be the last of your career.
